2010 Christmas Message

I have always thought of Christmas as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time in the long calendar of the year, when men and women open their shut-up hearts freely. Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance . . . a day when we think of everything we have ever loved . . . a day that leads all roads home . . . a day that holds all time together . . . a day of reliving the happy hours of yesterday and creating those for tomorrow.

Best of all, Christmas is the time to celebrate and appropriate the meaning of Jesus Christ's birth – the greatest reason for the season. It is a time when the love of God and the love our fellow men should prevail over all hatred and bitterness, a time when our thought and deeds and the spirit of our lives manifest the presence of God. It is the blessed season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love. And it is only Christmas in our hearts that can put Christmas in the air – a tenderness for the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future.

As one Franciscan family, let us honor Christmas in our hearts this season and fill each other's cups with its blessings all the days in between.    Let the warmth of Christmas bring us closer to one another. Let everyday be Christmas!

A blessed Christmas to you all!
